Is it possibly groundhog for “eh”? (What animal is that exactly?!)
I’m thinking groundhog. He was probably letting out its mating call and somewhat concerned by the results he was getting.
Richardson’s Ground Squirrel or commonly called a gopher. They were nearly all exterminated by farmers. There used to be a bounty on their tails.
Maybe it was an alarm call. It was saying, “Don’t come out because there’s a creepy guy out here trying to talk to me even though I’m a squirrel and I can’t answer him.” Or else it was saying, “I’m going to eat your face.”

I think he has the hiccups, if not mistaken.
